Here's the beginning of a new painting painted on top of an old painting. It's a complete experiment, and I'm trying keep it loose. We'll see how it goes, but right now it kind of feels like I'm painting it out of the corner of my eye.

This month's Art Ltd. has a lovely review of my recent show at Artzone 461. The text, by Dewitt Cheng, is below.

Photography and Impressionism came of age together in mid-19th century Paris, sharing an interest in the new world as a compelling spectacle requiring no moral or allegorical justification. The staged tableaux of the classical tradition gave way to realism, nicely exemplified in Stendhal's description of the novel as a mirror carried down a road. With their oddly cropped compositions, blurred focus, and embrace of the fugitive and transient, the slice-of-life works of Degas, Manet, Monet, and Renoir paradoxically foreshadow Kodak. (Other painters took photographic roads not chosen by the Impressionists, of course.) Painter Heidi McDowell updates this symbiosis, exploiting the "quick, cheap and easy nature of digital cameras" and the auto's mobility to scan for images worthy of transcription into her chosen medium. McDowell: "Oil painting has its own 'artifacts' and unpredictable process-related effects... Rough painterly marks are often enough to indicate detail, and each medium mixed with the paint adds its own unique texture to the painting's surface." She includes in her finished works, however, the "digital artifacts, dust on the sensor, reflections in the car window and other 'aberrations' found in photographic source material."

McDowell's two dozen paintings from 2010 and 2011 in Road Trip are unsentimental and unfussy--no waiting for the photographic golden hour here--yet, despite their modest size, dramatic. Faraway views like Silo 2, Red Hill, Radar, and Reservoir are so suffused with light and atmosphere that their ostensible subjects, shrunk and faded by distance, seem, initially, almost irrelevant; once seen, however, they become surrogates for the passing viewer--silent sentinels. The askew horizons, close-up views, and tight cropping in Tank 2, Yosemite Landscape, Tank Reflection, Refinery 3 and House on Stilts commemorate the landmarks of the passing scene while recapitulating compositional devices employed by modernist painters and photographers alike. Her paintings of riders in passing cars (Duster, Fastback) add social observation, while the twin water towers in Victorville add deadpan humor. Such is the yield from a memory chip driven along a superhighway by a sharp-eyed driver/painter.

Just started these paintings a few days ago, and I'm having so much fun with the new subject matter. The top one came from a flip video shot through binoculars at Yosemite (it's Bridalveil Fall). Lots of foamy detail will be added to the ocean. And the house pretty much got going this morning. It will have some scrubby trees and more freeway detail.

Slow progress

In case you think I've given up painting for full time printmaking... I have been working on these four pieces quite a bit. Unfortunately, they are quite big, and any progress is best seen close up. These two prints grew from the same yellow plate. They both involve experiments using paper stencils to mask off portions of the plate so that the brayer can be used to roll ink on in specific shapes.

Ghost prints and dry paper

Here are some experiments with printing on dry paper and then, without inking the plate again, printing on wet paper. Reprinting the plate without re-inking results in a "ghost" print, a faint copy of the original. Since it is so faint, I have been printing the ghost image, putting more ink on the plate to add detail, and printing that on top of the ghost. This results in the softer background tones with darker accents. The first image is a ghost print with a few added details. The next print was made on dry paper. The one following is its ghost. The two horse prints started as ghosts. The bottom print was done on dry paper.

Lots of experimentation with the press. Every print is a learning experience at this point, and it is so much fun. The leopard is silver and went through the press many times. In fact, it seemed like a failed experiment until the very last layer. The bottom image is my mom. I made it by inking the whole plate and using turpenoid to subtract the areas of the figure. This print led to the top two. This is an image of my friend Ursula's grandmother, who travelled with and performed in the circus. All are monotypes, as are the sea and landscapes below.

In addition to all the printmaking, I have been painting lots of new things. All still very much in process, especially the three large ones in the top image.

Discoveries

Lots of progress with the ink handling! These are all monotypes (the plate is blank except for the ink) made using a 9"x14" plexi plate. The top print was the first, and it almost did not happen. I had inked the sky intending to make a sunrise mountain landscape. Once I put on the orange color for the mountains, it became clear the image would not work. I almost scrapped the whole thing but decided not to waste all that ink. Using a brayer, I mixed the blue ank orange ink until it was smooth. This suggested a refinery image I painted a while back. After several other good ideas turned into mistakes turned into discoveries, this silver tank appeared. All four prints were run through the press twice, the second pass mostly used to add darker color and detail.

One of my Christmas presents this year was a small etching press. Yay! These are from the first day of printing. Unfortunately, photos cannot reproduce the beautiful colors and the wonderful way the ink sits on the paper. Now I just wish I had more hours in the day.

One of the best ways to keep warm in my very cold studio is to stretch canvas. Since it's been quite wintery here lately, I have built up a large supply of new canvases. I find blank canvas irresistible, so these won't sit around very long, but it's nice to be able to start so much new work at the start of the new year.

The top three paintings are sourced from Flip videos I shot in Texas and California. The tunnel is part of a series. Bottom two are older work getting closer to completion.

I took a drypoint and monoprint workshop yesterday with Zach Gilmour. It was my first experience with this type of printmaking, and I had so much fun. The process involved drawing on plexi plates with sharp objects, inking the plates and printing them. The three middle images are printed from the same plate with variations in the amount and color of ink.

"Visual Aid presents a solo show of oil paintings by Heidi McDowell, the inaugural exhibition of their new gallery in the historic Mechanic's Institute Building.

At first glance, it's clear that McDowell's tender paintings of clouds and blurred California landscapes are inspired by German romantic paintings. Evidence of the paintings' origins as digital images becomes apparent upon closer inspection. McDowell paints the lens flares and digital artifacts that are aberrations left behind in the making of a visible image (often overlooked or discarded as "mistakes"). When incorporated into her paintings, these details situate the viewer within the space of the painting and add a layer of complexity to the work, further clarifying and enhancing the experience of specific light conditions."
